really liked it

I liked this better than My Sister's Keeper as a whole, although I have some of the same complaints about it. This author is a master of making you believe in a story that makes exactly no sense and making you care about characters who behave like exceptional idiots*. If I thought about any of it for very long, it was all mind-numbingly stupid. But I have to admit that the story is engrossing and satisfying in the end.
PS--this is not a book for the bashful; there's a lot of sex in it, of the awkward teenage variety and also of the middle-aged parents variety. Also of the getting-molested-in-a- McDonalds-bathroom variety (hey, we've all been there). Perhaps this only stuck out to me because I was listening to the audiobook and the guy narrating it sounded like a gay Casey Kasem (redundant?), and this is not the type of person that you want to hear narrating a sex scene every 5 minutes and saying things like "Oh, yes, give it to me." You also have to wonder what's up with all the sex in a book about suicide. Call me a Puritan, but ew. So why am I giving this 4 stars? That's why Jodi Picoult is a gazillionaire and I am not. She has magical powers, like a Jedi.
PPS to English teachers--carefully note the blatant thievery of the foreshadowing scene in Of Mice and Men where Candy can't kill his dog. Steinbeck is rolling over in his grave.
*Edit from my original review, which said "behave like retards," and a couple of commenters took offense, perhaps rightfully so. I'm an English teacher and ought to know to be more careful with my word choices.

Vinola ahaha, couldn't have said it better myself!

Kathie Kelly Your review would have been more valid to me if you hadn't chosen to use the "R" word in describing the actions of the characters. You might want to educate yourself on appropriate vs offensive language to use in your reviews.

Danielle Fuller Kathie lol apparently you're the type that needs a trigger warning for everything. Grow up!

Jenn I'm with Kathie.

Stacey For those of you offended by "the r word," I edited it. This review is 9 years old, but you're probably right. Like many of my reviews, it was written in haste, late at night, probably after some vodka.

Reagan Brasch Casey Kasem!! So true. You鈥檙e also right about the random middle aged sex scenes. This audiobook was all over the place 馃槀

Dana Um, do you really think we were all molested in a McDonalds, or somewhere similar? Not true. It would be wise to speak for yourself and not for thousands of women who have read this book. I am glad someone called you out on your word choice with the "r" word, and that you found a better way to say what you were trying to say. I am surprised no one called you out for saying "a gay Casey Kasem." I remember him from many (MANY) decades ago, but never thought about his sexual orientation and found it odd that you put a qualifier in front of his name. You may be saying that someone "sounded gay" (which is a ridiculous generalization) in a way that Casey WOULD have sounded if he WERE gay, not that he is or is not, but your wording was unclear on that. I just do not think you should generalize about how someone sounds based on whether or not they are gay. I am straight. Do I sound different than a woman who is not? The whole thing would pretty off putting to someone who is gay. I hate when any group is marginalized or about whom people generalize. In today's world, we all have to be mindful of these things.
