it was amazing

One of the worlds best selling books of all time, Agatha Christie's "and Then There Were None" sets the standard for crime fiction.
The book was first published under a different title in jolly old England, but even back in 1939 American publishers were far too politically correct to use a title they found so offensive.
Still again, in 1964 and again in 1986 a third title was published but political correctness struck again. I read the book under the authors original title because I wanted to read it as she intended it.
The book has inspired radio broadcast, stage adaptations, television mini series, several movies, board and video games.

As the 1939 story begins, 8 unacquainted guest have been invited to a very large home on an isolated island off the coast of England for a type of holiday. When the water ferry drops them off they find their host has not yet arrived but there are two staff members there to meet their needs. Soon it is brought to their attention that all 8 guest along with the 2 staff members are accused of various murders from their past. Then the first of the guest drops dead. By the next morning another of the remaining 9 is found dead. There is surely a murderer on the island and as the story continues to unfold the reader is never given any information other than that which the guest may encounter.

I didn't figure out who done it. I do know that I didn't do it.
But you fellow reader ... the way you so innocently stopped to read this review. Perchance to see if any incriminating evidence has been uncovered..
Very suspicious, I say.

Thank you Diana.
Christie is noted as saying this was her most difficult book to write. Now here we are I believe some 80 years later still enjoying the fruit of her labors.

Kat valentine ( Katsbookcornerreads) Awesome review!💖😉

Barbara LeMere I liked your review Pirate Steve. I too wanted to read this the way Christie originally intended it. PBS recently did a great remake of this book. I have seen several of the past remakes and they were fun in their own way but none of them had the tone of real menace that this book actually has.

It's good to be back, seems the Winter weather puts in the reading mood. Thank you Charlotte for the kind words.

Tracey Not read an Agatha Christie in many years, your review has inspired me to get one at once.
Nice one Steve! :)

Pattie What a great review! It really makes me want to go to my Agatha Christie collection and read it again. It has been many years but, like others, I have enjoyed many of her mysteries produced as a series or a movie.

Thanks Barbara. I'm very glad that I chose to read Christie's original story. To begin with I thought the publishers were being over sensitive but as I went further into the book I found there was some offensive racial slandering dialogue. Before the halfway point of the book Christie addresses this issue .... turns out Christie had something she wanted to say about it.
So the publishers remove the offensive dialogue and the book becomes one of the worlds all time best sellers. And it is still a great story.

I've not watched any of the films of this book but I will if a get the chance.

PorshaJo Great review! And a great Christie book also.

Thanks Pattie.
An Agatha Christie collection should be a well used set of books and I hope to see one of those films soon.

Kate Baxter Excellent review of a seminal book, Steve. I especially liked the teaser at the end.
Personally, I struggle with all the different titles for this book. I realize that this title is from the closing verse of a children's song/poem. But "were none" just causes my grammarian hairs to bristle. Oh well, such is the life.

Paula K Awesome review, Steve!

Ah, Ms.Cecily, right you are to question everything when dealing with matters of mystery.
I see that you, yourself, have added your name to the list of suspects ... and then immediately cast suspicion in anothers direction. What would Agatha think of this?

Thank you Kate.
Three different titles for the book and at least one movie used the 1964 book title. Why not go for ten little titles?

Randelina Wherever did you find an original to read? My edition is the PC and I did wonder how much of the wording in the story is changed along with the title. Your review sets a reader up perfectly for the book. Bravo sir.

carmen Using the N word isn’t politically correct. It’s about having some humanity not to act like a disgusting pig.

message 44: by Mary (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mary Hey Carmen, PC does change our history and makes young generations ignorant as to how we got where we are. For example, my granddaughter's high school English class began reading To Kill a Mockingbird in her sophomore year. Parents complained and called it racist. (I'm pretty sure none had read it) It is the most anti-racist novel I have ever read. I first read it when I was 10 years old and have read it every few years since to remind myself how it was and how it is and how it could be again. BTW, I have met teenagers who do not know who Stalin was and only vague idea of Hitler's purposes were in WW11 Very scary for the future but both of those men committed atrocities that would make us all more comfortable if we knew nothing about them. So sad.

Adina (notifications back, log out, clear cache) I agree it sets the standard, A very good mystery.

message 46: by Katie (new) - rated it 1 star

Katie "even back in 1939 American publishers were far too politically correct to use a title they found so offensive." Political correctness didn't "strike"; common decency and humanity did. I checked this book out from the library in 2022 and found the N word in the first 25 pages so political correctness apparently didn't alter history that much here.

Adam Fenner Very fun review. Thank you PirateSteve. I’m going to look into this one.
