*looks at all the shiny five star reviews*
*looks at my two star review*

this book was definitely ... something. don't get me wrong. even though i had problems with this book, it was an okay read
BUT
and here comes the big "but". but this book did have some problems hence my 2.5 star rating (you can't see it but it's there). this book has already been reviewed to bits explaining the "goodies" and yours truly is here to point out the "problems" with this book.
˗ˏˋ the enemies to lovers trope ˎˊ˗
my biggest problem: this book is not an enemies to lovers/college rivals turned lovers romance. i mean maybe when they were college students they did have rivalry but do we get to see it? no.
then how the heck do i get hyped up for thrill i get when i read an enemies to lovers? we go as far as the second chapter and there are already sparkles in the air. i don't find this cute. i don't find this fluffy. i don't like my expectations - no scratch that. these were not my expectations. the premise of this book promises that this is an enemies to lovers. but i ask this book the same question i ask every book that labels itself as an enemies to lovers: when the heck did your characters hate each other?
i know i know i am being picky. but isn't this about preferences? i am a sucker for a good romance and this book did have a good romance but it failed to deliver the "enemies" part and in doing so, it lost my love for it.
˗ˏˋ failing at what it's supposed to be ˎˊ˗
imagine that you are going through a really really messy part in your life. so you read a rom-com in order to escape real life. but this rom-com is ... not a rom-com. it reads like a woman fiction. the girl just lost her father. her father cheated on her mother. umm wow? wasn't this a rom-com?
the first half of this book focuses on the messy parts, the part where you are lost and you don't know what to do now. but then after you read the first half, the book gets warm and sunny to the point of irritation. suddenly problems are solved, books get published and the book shifts from the "woman fiction" you were reading to the "romance" it was supposed to be all along. but it was too late.
by that time, i was too engrossed in finding out the answer to all these problems. but suddenly these problems weren't important. now we are going on trips and what not. it becomes a fluffy cute romance novel.
why though?
˗ˏˋ january andrews ˎˊ˗
i didn't like her *laughs weakly* she is super smart, she is amazing, she is snarky, she is good at banter okay okay okay i get it. now just stop. but sadly emily henry didn't stop at that.
january annoyed me. and that is never a good thing.

she has daddy issues.

and she has money issues.

yeah no thankyou.
˗ˏˋ the genre swapping thingy ˎˊ˗
so the big plot point was supposed to be "he writes a happy book and she writes a sappy book" but this lost it's charm the moment that inevitable misunderstanding trope made it's appearance. For once ... JUST FOR ONCE I ASK THAT THE AUTHORS FORGET THAT THIS TROPE EXISTS AND MAKE A GENUINE REASON DUE TO WHICH THE MC'S HATE EACH OTHER AND NOT BECAUSE OF SOME DAMN MISUNDERSTANDING.
95% of this book doesn't even focus on the book writing. It's sad and moppy and maybe it worked for others but for me a.k.a a person who was looking for sunshine and bubbles and rainbows this book was a failure.
˗ˏˋ why the two stars? ˎˊ˗
there were good parts like some dialogues, the last 20% ... there that's it. had the whole book focused on the romance part i would have easily given it 3.5ish stars.
˗ˏˋ bottom line ˎˊ˗
an okay book, which had to fail spectacularly at what it was actually supposed to be first, to become so.

“How do you know I didn’t just Google it? I countered. “Maybe I’d never heard of it before.
“How do you know that your Googling me wouldn’t be even more amusing to me? Gus said.
“How do you know I wasn’t Googling you out of suspicion you had a criminal background?
Gus replied, “How do you know I won’t keep answering your questions with other questions until we both die?

Is something wrong with me? What is happening? Please don't let this be a fail. Pleaseeeeee.
Am I just too cynical? Am I petty?

I was threatened that i should not make any cabbage jokes anymore but of course that's why i made that cabbage joke.

ugh i am always here to give unpopular opinions

i stan the regency era romance though ... case in point: Pride and Prejudice a.k.a my favorite book of all time

being a super mean person IRL people don't say nice things to me (usually) but this is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me

SUPER bad idea because i rate 49 out of 50 books less than three stars but i support you [hugs back]
I will shorten your tbr. I promise.

There is no enemies to lovers, i did not know there was supposed to be that. This is not rom com its based on very serious topics and its makes u sad for like 50 percent of the time. And they did not swap genres from the ending actually... like you were supposed to do one thing. Also i wanted more of the writing process. Heheh . Wow. Yeap.

happens to all of us

i actually thought it was pretty average. I didn't "hate" it. I'm sorry you didn't like it :(

had it been some other time i would've LOVED it but i was looking for fluff and i got all sad and moppy :(

sorry for the late reply. Yes i must've missed the warnings and WHY THE YELLOW MISLEADING COVER :/

Before i write a negative review i always look through the number of negative reviews and then feel like an alien but after writing the review so many people tell me that they feel the same way !! I LOVE YOU GUYS !!

eeeee YAY !! I am glad your qualms were justified :) It makes me so happy to see i'm not the only one who doesn't like this book :D
