well, wasnt this just a spooky little story?! i knew i should have saved this for next month.

fans of gothic stories will swoon over this. its so atmospheric. the old mansion, the creepy family who lives there, the lush mexican countryside. i was honestly really, really enjoying myself up until the near end.

the turn of events were a little too unrealistic for me, i suppose. i wanted to gasp in shock but i ended up just rolling my eyes. i know the way things play out wont bother some readers, and it does fit the feel/vibe of the story, but something about it all was underwhelming for me. which is why im not rating this higher.

but again, gothic fans will love and this and i have no problem recommending this to people wanting the spooky autumnal feel.

Haleyyy Is it more thriller or horror? I've been wanting to read it but don't do well with super scary-ness

jessica its a mix between the two, like gothic stories tend to be. but its more creepy than it is scary. im the biggest wimp and this didnt scare me all at.

Sri Phew! Fellow wimp here and I'm glad to know it wasn't too scary - saving it to read for October! :)

Haleyyy so am i! I'm going to try it, we will see if i make it through!

Bianca & pancho Aldama What can you compare it to

jessica the atmosphere feels very gothic, similar to 'the haunting of hill house,' 'rebecca,' and 'the yellow wallpaper.' but i cant really think of a story that is similar plotwise. some parts towards the end reminded me of 'wilder girls,' but i would never compare the two.

Lindsey Lanza Your review is spot on - it’s creepy but not scary and I personally found it boring

jessica its very slow paced, so i totally understand how it can feel boring. so sorry you didnt enjoy it!

Claire I was glancing through reviews to see if I was alone but your review captured my feelings perfectly. Totally agreed.

Marie Kelleher I agree! It seems like a lot of the so-so reviews like the end but complain about the first two thirds (“too slow!), but I adored the gothic novel part, which reminds me of Shirley Jackson, then the supernatural twist left me cold.

Kelli Bragg I love gothic tales, but this book was a could-not-finish. I don't mind slow...I do mind an unnecessarily plodding pace. I skipped huge chunks just to try to finish, but even that didn't help. I had such high hopes and was so looking forward to reading this book...dang. Back to searching for more interesting gothic tales.

Runa I agree, I was very underwhelmed by the "plot twist." I audibly went

*SPOILERSSSSSS*

"Oh... that's it? Mushrooms?"

Hersh I agree with your points on how the turn of events felt a bit too unrealistic. I was quite underwhelmed by it too!

Dan What a great review. And it expresses exactly how I felt about the book.
