did not like it

I am a huge Feeney fan and have loved everything of hers that I have read so far....until now.

First of all, I hated all of the characters which is normally not a problem for me if their interesting and intriguing but this cast was neither of those things.

Everyone in this book is shivering, trembling, or tutting & tsking. Enough so, that I not only picked up on it but also became annoyed by it.

I'm not a fan of locked room mysteries but because this was Feeney I wanted to keep an open-mind. That'll teach me. So boring, so repetitive.

The poems were painful to read. If I didn't love my Kindle I would have chucked it at the wall.

The way people spoke in this drove me bananas. Especially Nana. It's as if Feeney wanted her portrayed as the wisest woman to have ever walked the Earth.

And don't even get me started on the twist and the ending. To call me disappointed would be an understatement. I wish Feeney stuck to what she does best, psychological thrillers, instead of this attempt at ripping off Agatha Christie.

Many of my friends loved this and I am so happy for all of those that were blown away. I suggest that potential readers check out all of the reviews, good and bad, to determine whether this is worthy of your time.

I will still check out Feeney's future work because I've loved some of her other books but this is by far my least favorite. 1 star!

Thanks to Overdrive for the loan!

I wish I could pretend she never wrote this and I never read this. 🤷‍♀

Helga Thank the Lord! I thought it's only me. I was generous and gave it 3 stars, though!
The repeating of someone's wearing pink and purple pyjamas or the wise word were super annoying.
And what about the ending? How was it going to be explained to the police? ugh

JaymeO So sorry you were disappointed by this one! I loved it! Great review!

Ha! Thanks, Helga! I almost mentioned the pink and purple pajama's too. Why she wanted Nana and Trixie to dress like adolescent little girls is beyond me. 🤷‍♀

Thank you, Jayme! 🤍 I'm so happy you loved this. Most of my friends did which is why it pains me so much to have not enjoyed this.

Canadian Jen Oh no! I have this out now and I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed too. Appreciate your thoughts, Michelle!

JanB uh oh, sorry you hated this! I loved it which just proves no book is for everyone and no two readers read the same book. I hope you love your next one!

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - in a book slump :( I’m so sorry Michelle! 😢 it’s so hard when it seems everyone loves it and you don’t, I have SO been there so many times. I appreciate your honesty and luckily at least it was a library loan rather than an ARC or a book you bought (that always hurts more!) you detailed all of the reasons you didn’t like it so well though, very honest review and I hope your next book wows you! 💖

Michelle Jen wrote: "Oh no! I have this out now and I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed too. Appreciate your thoughts, Michelle!"

Thank you, Jen! 💖 Please know that I am an outlier amongst almost everyone I know and I hope you love this! 🤞

Thanks so much, Jan! 💗 I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.

NZLisaM Right there with you Michelle. Thought I was the only one.

Thanks very much, Catherine! 💛 I know this was a favorite for you and I'm so happy it was. The twist and the end is what sealed its one star fate for me.

Ha! Thanks, Lisa! 💜 Have no fear because you are no longer alone in your opinion and we can sit in outlier land together!

Rachel this is definitely my least favorite from this author! i still gave it 3 stars but get why you hate it. i rolled my eyes at one of the twists and thought this wasn’t original at all.

Haha! I can't imagine having listened to it on audio. Yikes! 😂

Jayme Thank Goodness it was just a library loan for you!! Hope you love your next!! ❤️

Kat Ooof. Great review, Michelle! Only the audio got this to four stars for me. It would've been lower had I tried to read it. I hope your next read is stellar! 💗

Holly B (slower pace!) Bummer, so sorry this was a mess for you Michelle! Hoping your next makes up for it!

Terrie Robinson Fab review, Michelle! I have the audiobook of this one and plan to listen to it in October and discover where I fall... :-D

Tamar...playing hooky for a few hours today So sorry you didn't love this , Michelle. I just finished and completely see all your points. I did love it but I figured it was homage to an obvious well-worn Christie plot...Just in case we didn't get it the first seven times the characters refer to her book at the end of the story. The two main twists were also obvious. And I had the same thought as Helga above re the police. Nevertheless, and despite all of the above...I did love the book, though not as much as Sometimes I Lie but as much as her others....I hope your/her next one is a winner for you♥️♥️♥️

Sujoya - theoverbookedbibliophile Oh dear! I wasn’t a fan of this one either but I did like the poems. I’ve noticed that those who opted for the audiobook enjoyed it a bit more. I agree that Feeney should stick to writing psychological thrillers. Great review, Michelle! 🧡

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader Thoughtful review, Michelle! We can’t love them all and I hope your next one is a love!

Thank you, Tamar! 💕 I am so happy to hear you loved this. I have enjoyed every Feeney book I've read until this one so I haven't given up on her yet and I've struggled with locked room mysteries in the past so these types of books just aren't for me.

Thank you very much, Sujoya! 🧡 It does seem like the audio listeners enjoyed it more. I wish I could do audio books but I find that I get too distracted and stop paying attention.

Melissa ~ Bantering Books I appreciate your honesty, Michelle. I haven't read it yet, but I'm nevertheless thinking that Feeney should've stayed away from poetry. 🤣

Michelle Melissa wrote: "I appreciate your honesty, Michelle. I haven't read it yet, but I'm nevertheless thinking that Feeney should've stayed away from poetry. 🤣"

Haha! Thanks, Melissa! 💖 Yes, she most definitely should not have attempted poetry. The fact that it's repeated throughout the book ad nauseum didn't help matters.

Michael David (on hiatus) The poems were so bad! I forgot to put that in my review. Lol! Fantastic review, Michelle! I hope you love your next read!💞

Michelle Michael wrote: "The poems were so bad! I forgot to put that in my review. Lol! Fantastic review, Michelle! I hope you love your next read!💞"

Haha! Thanks, Michael! 💗 Poetry is not in Feeney's wheelhouse.

Danielle wrote: "Those poems and rhymes were awful. I got the audio and I cringed so bad 😂🤣"

Feeney writes such beautiful prose that I was confounded by the dissonance of the poems - the rhyming combined with the awkward meter was so awful that I assumed she was poking fun at the arrogance of her characters. She is such a brilliant author, I do not believe she was trying to impress the reader with her poetic prowess.

Ellie Spencer (catching up from hiatus) Oh no! I am so sorry that this one was such a let down for you Michelle! I have this on my tbr and now I feel a little nervous! What a shame about the characters and repetition! I hope you love your next read, thank you for your wonderful and honest review! 🧡

Melissa (Always Behind) Sorry this didn't work for you, how disappointing! I really enjoyed this one, but I'm an outlier lately for more books than not it seems so I say proudly embrace your opinions! Onward and I hope Feeney's next is better for you.

Jayne I agree with all of your comments, Michelle. Great honest review. I did not like this book either. The only thing I liked about the book was the fact that the author used "Darker" as the surname for the family.

Ha! Thanks, Jayne! 🧡 Yeah, this one was really a disappointment from start to finish. I hope she goes back to what she does best next time.

Derek (I'M BACKKKK!) Spot on review, Michelle! I saw the ending from a mile away. Sadly, Feeney says this is her favorite and best book 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂

Thanks, Derek! 💜 Eek! She said that?!?! I would have to strongly disagree with her on that.
