Time of death: around 30%

I’ve read and (and loved) a lot of hockey romances, so that’s not the issue here. And I’ve read a lot of cheesy romances, too, and I’m an expert at squinting and ignoring plot holes in stories when I like the characters.

And I really like Tal Bauer.

I just don’t like this one. I won’t rate it, because I haven’t read enough of it to rate it. But there are too many things that annoy me to continue.

One of my major issues is the randomly thrown in phrases or words in French. I mean- I get it. It’s Quebec. People are bilingual there. But I’m bilingual, too (even if not with French). And I’ve never seen people talk like that unless both parties involved are bilingual. Hunter only speaks English, Bryce is the bilingual one, and he randomly throws in phrases (not only „calisse or „tabernak, but entire sentences) when talking to Hunter.

And not once Hunter asks what he meant.

I don’t get it. It’s rude. You can do that if you can’t talk the other language properly, but for someone who speaks both English and French, it’s just plain rude.

And then the cheesiness. Bryce obviously falls in love instantly, and so badly he can’t think about anything or anyone else than Hunter. Hunter has some kind of hero worship going on, so he must be a lot younger than Bryce if he had posters of him as a teenager.

I don’t know. It feels off. So I‘ll stop before it annoys me even more and look for something else - this one isn’t for me.

Snjez Sorry you didn't enjoy it, Cat. ❤️ Great review, though. You expressed so well why it didn't work for you.

Kati *☆・゚ Honestly, at one point or another I wished I had the courage to dnf as well 😅

Imme van Gorp Agreed, honestly. The french felt a bit odd to me as well. I would never just randomly start speaking my native language to a person who doesn’t understand it. Who does that?🥴

No idea why Tal Bauer chose to go this way, I'm pretty sure it would have ended up being at least a 3 star read for me
