I adore Tal Bauer but this book was mega cringe for me, so much so that I gave up around 45% in. That's baaaadddd.

Now, Tal does schmoopy romances, but this sappy, insta-lovey story just about made my eyes roll permanently into my head. It was just too much

However, my main pet peeve was the weird insertions of French into every sentence. I've read a ton of books with bilingual characters, and they don't constantly shove in other languages in every sentence. Trust me, we would have gotten that he was from Quebec without Tal's awkward, novice-level French making every conversation feel stilted and strange. I had a hard time getting through it.

I love Tal AND I adore hockey romances, but this book is not it.

Brittingbloom Yeah. So sad.

Hemmel M. Funny, isn't it, that in real life the first words you learn abroad are: yes, no, please, darling, hello, et cetera. Yet, in novels, characters always use their native tongue for those words. It is completely the opposite. The author adjusts his characters' knowledge to the understanding of the reader.

It just really didn't work

YES!

Therese Great review, exactly my thoughts on it as well unfortunately. I hope the author’s next one will be less sappy:-)

Let's hope!!

nick I definitely agree with the awkward bilingual insertions.

I feel like Tal is just overall a very sappy writer, which has its pros and cons. sorry this was such a miss for you though :(

Sayaka Huh very interesting! I love Tal especially the Executive series, secret service and Noah and Cole’s stories. I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed You & Me since it’s so different. I was hesitant to pick this one up but now I rly dont think I will. Growing up in Quebec, I dont want more french hockey stuff haha and I didnt love some of his other novels that felt rly insta love and light. Dont get me wrong, I’m a fan of insta love but I need tension and action too. Thanks for this!

I adored You and Me but this didn't work for me. Curious what you would think of it

Yeah, very sappy, which I usually adore :/

Cat the bookworm (semi hiatus ish) I gave up on it, too. A shame, I usually like Tal Bauer, too

Cadiva Doh!

I loved this one and just treated all the Québécois as romantic dialogue (given it was pretty much explained about a sentence later each time in slightly different ways!)

:( hopefully the next is better

I'm glad you enjoyed! It was just so distracting and felt so unnatural for me.

I can also totally understand that as well, it was very odd and appeared in strange dialogue places (which is why I just pretty much ignored it and acted like it was just Bryce being all "romantic" and getting in his Canadian feels :D )

Jane (whatjanereads) I’m 17% in and thinking about DNFing because saaammme 😩

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) Jane wrote: "I’m 17% in and thinking about DNFing because saaammme 😩"

Cat the bookworm (semi hiatus ish) I gave up at 30% for about the same reasons 😐 a shame really

Juiced Nurse Oh my god I’m laughing. I just hit 45% and thought what the heck is going on here!!! I’m persevering will report back 😂😂😂

Anne in VA Note to self: remove from my "want to read" list

message 24: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna thank you so much for “schmoopy, I read your review a while ago and it stuck in my head because it’s a perfect adjective for Tal Bauer’s writing - I just finished this one and it’s the schmoopiest so far 😆

It's just so schmoopy!

message 26: by Lorenzo (new)

Lorenzo yeaaah. I tried and I couldn't. And that REALLY hurts, because I love Tal with all my heart, but it was a DNF for me as well. I also feel that I shouldn't have - because it's only like 200 pages. Ugh.
