3.5 stars for this wild book which throws you right into the reality of extreme addictions and messy relationships.
Lily and Loren's journey is intense, complicated and certainly toxic. Lily is a sex addict, Lo is an alcoholic. They’re childhood best friends, who are trying to appear as the perfect couple by hiding their addictions. This makes for a dangerous pairing, as together they enable one another and in some way perhaps they’re just as addicted to each other.
The portrayal of their addictions, of how it impacts their lives and relationships, is done really well. It doesn’t just affect themselves, it also impacts everyone around them.
The thing is though, their relationship didn’t quite hit as good as I hoped. The lead up to their eventual coupling felt a bit off. They barely communicated with each other outside of their addictions. But I guess that’s also highlighting just how consuming their addictions are.
The side characters in this book really make it for me. I enjoyed seeing Lil and Lo’s circle grow, the dynamic between them plus Connor, Rose and Ryke was so good!
The writing isn't the absolute best, but there's definitely something addicting about it. Couldn’t stop reading as it was so enjoyable! It gave me Gossip Girl vibes, with all the drama and secrets in an affluent world. I love that show, and rewatch it all the time so I’m hoping I’ll love the rest of this series too! Curious to see where the story goes 🤭
