** spoiler alert **
I can’t believe I am leaving a 2 star rating for a book in this series, because I adore these characters and this series.
But this book I just have to ask, why?
WHY didn’t we get a Slade/Auren reunion? 600+ pages and they still are not united!? This is a romance series after all. How did this get past editing?
WHY didn’t we get a Rissa waking up scene?
WHY did we get such a long (and sorry - boring) Malina redemption arc?
WHY was Lu basically missing from this book entirely?
WHY did this book end setting up the beginning of the next book with one of the most exhausting, most overused tropes ever?
Slade unhinged is the best part of this book.
The rest- is just filler for what should have been an epic series finale.
Also, there were literally no surprises in this entire book. If Auren running into Slades father was supposed to be shocking, it wasn’t.
If Malina and the Assassin getting together (which is the one and only spicy scene you get in the book, and I have to say it’s really not top tier) is supposed to be surprising, it’s not.
If the ending and Auren getting her memory wiped is supposed to be shocking, it was too little too late. By this point I was just annoyed that we’ve been dragged along for 640 pages and now are either going to have to watch Auren get used, yet again and for (I’m sure) her not remembering Slade, for some length of time, (which will just extend the reunion, even further.)
Unfortunately this just didn’t hit for me. Where the story should have been tying up loose ends, there were new storylines starting. I think RV was maybe just trying to do too much here and there is so much ground still to cover to wrap this series up.
