Why is she at a romance author convention meant for readers? Of course no one is going to her booth, readers don’t need graphic designers. This is stupid.

His reasons for not playing hockey are illogical. He didn’t like fighting so he played football instead. A full contact sport. And he plays defence.
I’m not defending hockey. I hate hockey. But I also hate football. So make it make sense.

Rae (semi-hiatus) What's wrong with Winnipeg? 😂

Kristina It’s Winnipeg.

Rae (semi-hiatus) It’s Winnipeg! 🎉

Kristina Lol. So you’re saying it’s positioning?
I can’t really say what I think of Winnipeg without looking like a snob. Which to be fair, I am. 😈 so I will just say I’m glad this isn’t set there. Also because a football book set in Winnipeg would be about a cfl player and that’s unexciting because he’d also have a day job and would never be able to afford a housekeeper. Lol.

Elizabeth @Kristina... I'm curious of what you will say on this book. It's one of my absolute favorites, but it's SLOOOOOW burn. I adore a good slow burn. Not set in Winnipeg, tho!

Kristina Lol I need to update my Winnipeg comment to say that of all the cities to set a football book in Canada, Winnipeg would be the best choice because they actually give a fuck about their cfl team. And the higher paid players are usually on that team.

*though my snobby self would also point out that this is because that city can’t get any other professional sport franchise so they have little choice and little else to do there. 😈 but I didn't say that. 👀

Kristina @Elizabeth so far so good. I’m enjoying it and I do like that he’s Canadian even though I’m complaining about it. Hehe.
Slow burns kill me but going in aware of it should help lol. If you see me ranting later and demanding they fuck already, that’s just how I read slow burn, it doesn’t mean I’m not totally invested in the story and enjoying myself.

Rae (semi-hiatus) It's pretty tho!
Yeah, all her books are MAJOR slow burn. But they're the best 🥺

Kristina I’ve braced myself for the slow burn and I have some side smut to get me through 😂.

Also, why were you in Winnipeg? If I may ask.

Rae (semi-hiatus) You're side reads are important 😏

If I'm able to vacation, I try to vacation in Canada. I was up in Thief River Falls, MN several years ago and it wasn't doing much for me so I drove over to Winnipeg and stayed there 💖. There were a lot more museums than I was expecting lol

Kristina Well we appreciate your business. 😊
Canada loves a museum, scenic view or a historical plaque.

Rae (semi-hiatus) anytime I leave America I breathe a lil easier and Canada is perfect for that 🥺

Kristina We have a lot of air up here though it is sometimes cold. Today was supposed to snow and I was so happy! But it didn’t. Now I’m sad. They probably have about ten feet of it in Winnipeg by now though 😂 I kid I kid. I’ve only been to Winnipeg in winter, which is a bad idea. They had a freeze your face off warning in effect both times I was there.

Rae (semi-hiatus) Y'all's weather 🤩👌❄️ Negatives? Frozen eyelashes kinda cold?
I loveee snow. I saw it for the first time in 2021 under not so great conditions but woah. It's so bright and pretty :O

Kristina Uh what? Omg. How did you LIVE without snow? The first snow fall with fluffy flakes that sticks to the grass is so peaceful. It’s zen like.
Looking out your window and feeling like you live inside a snowglobe. Laying on your back in a sausage like snowsuit and looking up into the sky. Snowpeople, snow fort wars, sledding, skating on a frozen pond. Snow is nature’s best creation. And when it snows it’s usually not that cold because cold air can’t hold water vapours. Childhood isn’t childhood if you haven’t buried at least one of your family members under a few feet of snow. Even my dog loves the first accumulation. She goes crazy running around trying to eat it. Google dogs discovering snow, funniest videos ever.

So the freeze your face off or extreme cold advisories are around -20 degree windchill (Celsius) . The kind of cold where exposed skin gets frozen or frost bite can happen in under ten minutes of exposure. So the water just under your epidermis freezes which if you stay out too long will turn black and die. So that’s not fun. You have to stay inside, even kids at school can’t go outside. You can go door to car to door. You have to have your car stocked in case it breaks down so you don’t freeze to death. Canadians have been plugging in their cars long before Teslas to heat the oil pans because it can freeze the oil in your car and then it won’t start. I don’t do that here, it doesn’t get cold enough. So ya snow. It’s great. But cold can get out of hand.

Kristina Wait. Were you referring to when it snowed in Texas and the power grid failed and Ted Cruz went to Mexico? Because that probably wasn’t so magical. But that was colds fault not snow. Snow is our friend. His evil twin ice is a bit of an asshole.

Rae (semi-hiatus) I love the cold, I'm not made for the heat 😿 That sounds...unbelievably fantastic. I am in fact jealous. The closest we've gotten to snow was (black) ice.

That is scary. It's hard to even imagine living in that for months every year, but ig it's a byproduct of living somewhere northern. We all have the downsides. 😬 Does that happen often during the winter?

Yes I am 😅 That was actually a traumatic experience. No power for weeks. Water lines frozen so no access to water for a week. Couldn't start my car to leave for someplace else. So many deaths all because of TX's freaking shitty power company, which, btw, can't even handle our hot weather either 😖

When I was able to appreciate it, it was magical. I saw the fresh snow and tiny lil rabbit footprints and man...it was honestly beautiful.

message 18: by Hannah (new)

Hannah @Rae just seconding the fact that we can't handle the hot weather either... 100° F for four months was nuts!! Get me out of Texas! Lol

Rae (semi-hiatus) It was so miserable I wanted to cry but knew I couldn't because I'd dehydrate 🤣 Luckily it seems it's finally getting in the 70s!!

Kristina That’s sounds horrifying. I watched a John Oliver (I know that’s not the name of his show but I call it that) about it and it seemed scary and avoidable. But to be fair, that show makes everything look depressing especially for a comedy show.
And the extreme cold happens rarely where I live and probably only a few days a year or one or two spells in most places. Canadians mostly don’t live in the really cold places. Winnipeg is one of the colder cities in the winter but it’s way north of me. Even Minnesota is north of me. Cold makes people hearty. My husband is from the north and he’s crazy. He drives in blizzards and barely wears his coat. I think his blood might be as thick as molasses. (That might be the poutine though) He’s part lumberjack, part grizzly bear. And he’s only from two hours north of Timmins which is probably the same latitude as Winnipeg. In conclusion Winnipeg is terrible.
Toronto is the same latitude as Boston so it’s not too bad. Mostly moderate. My face is safe from freezing off.

Rae (semi-hiatus) I love LWT! I think that's the point, especially considering the state of America. And yeah, it was also infuriating and horrifying, the fact that the power failure hit the marginalized communities at a disproportionately higher rate than any other. It killed more people than Hurricane Harvey.

Idk how ppl drive in the snow, much less a blizzard, it seems scary to me lol. The poutine 😂. Noted: Keep visiting Winnipeg, but only in the summer ✍️.

Kristina It makes me very sad to watch that show, and yet I am still laughing. It’s very confusing to my emotions.
I need to visit Winnipeg IN summer for once.

Elizabeth I have to say I was tempted to visit Winnipeg just because if this book. I decided to take a trip to Canada for American thanksgiving but chose Toronto instead. But I saw Winnipeg on the map and though “ooooh. 🤣

Kristina I can’t in good conscience ever condone a visit to Winnipeg over Toronto. Ever.
Did you go already or are you planning it?

Rae (semi-hiatus) Technically you could have also visited Toronto because of this book 👀

Elizabeth I bought my tix! Going in a month! :) Got any recs? I basically want to roam the city, eat good food, and read/write. Side trip to Niagara Falls of course.

Kristina Kids or no kids?
Don’t waste too much time on Niagara Falls. The falls, the casino and Clifton hill is it. It’s worth it to get a hotel room with a falls view though, Hilton falls view is the best but $$.
For Toronto there is so much if you have kids the aquarium and science centre are both very good. The aquarium takes less than three hours and it’s at the base of the cn tower. The tower costs a mint to go up but if you go to the restaurant it’s included and the restaurant is expensive but good and it spins around. It’s a white table cloth kind of place and old school. Look at the menu online though because prices be cray.
The Christmas market will be out and it’s in the distillery district and it’s super cute and pretty. Lots of photo ops. Cool food trucks.
There is Amsterdam brewery, which is a brew pub and has farm to table and beer parings…hmmm eleven is good on front street.
One king west or the pantages are good hotels that aren’t chains. Lemme think a bit. I will send you a message.

Elizabeth No kids! Except for myself. I like many kid type things. But this is great! Thanks. Super excited about a Christmas market!

Kristina It’s great at night. All lit up. Santa is there and I hear he’s the real one 😉
