Geneen Roth's pioneering books were among the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight and body image. She believes that we eat the way we live, and that our relationship to food, money, love is an exact reflection of our deepest held beliefs about ourselves and the amount of joy, abundance, pain, scarcity, we believe we have (or are allowed) to have in our lives.

Rather than pushing away the "crazy" things we do, Geneen's work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense, and that the way to transform our relationship with food is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves-instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. In the past thirty years, she has worked with hundreds of thousands of people using meditation, inquiry, and a set of seven eating guidelines that are the foundation of natural eating.

Geneen has appeared on many national television shows including: The Oprah Show, 20/20, The NBC Nightly News, The View and Good Morning America. Articles about Geneen and her work have appeared in numerous publications including: O: The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Time, Elle, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. She has written monthly columns in Good Housekeeping Magazine and Prevention Magazine. Geneen is the author of eight books, including The New York Times bestsellers When Food is Love and Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything. Her newest book, to be published in March 2011, is Lost and Found: Unexpected Revelations about Food and Money.

There certainly was interesting concepts in this book. I just don't understand why she felt the need to narrate it herself in the audio version when she has such an annoying way of talking. There are plenty of professionals who would have helped getting the point across more efficiently. My other problem is her writing style. She LOVES repeating herself. It really affected my experience with the book negatively, unfortunately. Back to the point of the book: the guidelines are a starting point, but I was hoping for more tools on how not to turn to food for emotional support, not just how to deal with food when you do.

This was a great introduction to Geneen’s vast and expansive body of work. I’ve struggled my whole life with what I now know to be emotional eating, and until discovering intuitive eating a few years ago, never could figure out how to get to the root of the issue.

Emotional eating recovery is the next step in my journey, and Geneen is a fabulous guide. The audiobook is wonderful, because she has such a calm and compassionate voice. She is definitely a believer in Buddhism and eastern spiritual practices, so if that’s something that bothers you, it might be hard to get beyond that language and approach. For me, however, even as a Catholic, I found it to be really effective and groundbreaking. She makes you aware of the ways emotional eating is a mindless, reactive way of dealing with pain, and gently and kindly helps you to untangle the layers of that. Highly recommend it as a jumping off point into learning more about emotional eating.

This very short audiobook was powerful with helping my daily struggles with sugar, especially turning to it during stressful times. The meditation/visualization exercises and specific directions were spot on. If you find yourself struggling with food in any way, I highly recommend this super short audiobook. Roth knows what’s she doing.

A thoughtful piece about emotional eating and how to approach and curiously learn from it, to a place one can grow. Short, but sweet.

I need to stop reading books without reading the synopsis. A bizarre a twisted version of intuitive eating. Chrissie Harrison would call this the intuitive eating diet.

I've read some of Geneen Roth's books on emotional overeating and I've been impressed with each one, this audio book was no exception.

She is a lovely, warm hearted individual who connects with her readers because she understands them, she understands why some people use food for feelings and she gives some wonderful suggestions in this book, including some visualizations to help control the urge to eat when we're not really hungry for food.

Her other books are better but this is a good "quick-and-dirty" overview of her theories.

Quick, thoughtful book about food addiction, aka "emotional eating." Some crossover tips about any vices used in lieu of facing difficult (or any) feelings.

While I went in with a pretty cynical mindset, hearing Roth's story and approach actually struck me. I will be continuing the mindful eating practices I learned in the book.

Good reminder about the value of mindfulness. Especially in eating. The ending was kind of sudden and odd but a nice personal touch.
