I'm so glad I picked them up because I'm loving being back with the world's most heroic threesome! There is more one-off mysteries going on that the gang has to solve, and it's very enjoyable to see how they go about doing so (with the help of one trusty Djinn bartender of course), but I'm also so intrigued by the overarching story with Adam's brother. It wasn't as central in this one, but you can always feel him lurking in the background (and he does pop in to stir some things up!). My review makes it seem so serious, but it's still our silly shenanigans crew that I love! It's wacky and ridiculous and everything I love from this series. ...more

I really wanted to like this, and I liked the writing style quite a bit, but I just did not leave feeling like I had any idea what was going on. Even I really wanted to like this, and I liked the writing style quite a bit, but I just did not leave feeling like I had any idea what was going on. Even when I would think I was following and I was interested, all the sudden I would need to rewind the audiobook to try to figure out what I was missing (the answer was nothing, it just really didn't work for me). I honestly thought I was dumb, but I've read plenty of other reviews that felt the same way. There was just some plotting elements that were completely missed. And I don't think it came down completely to language/writing style. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I appreciated what we might modernly call "code-switching" and how it reflected on who Demane was and how he perceived himself and others. But while I liked the who, and I understood the who; I felt the why was completely missing. The bones of the story were so fascinating that I keep trying to make myself like it, but I think I just have to admit it was not for me. 3 stars for entertaining me even when I didn鈥檛 get it....more

It starts off pretty good and for the first half I was kind of along for the ride. I liked the gender exploration and how it wasn鈥檛 made into a big deal, but it still was a large part of the identity of the main characters. I thought it really showed how who they were had been so intertwined that they had to figure out who each was on their own. And ostensibly, this is where the story kicks off.
However, I felt like it never really did kick off. This book bills itself as a novella, and while it鈥檚 too long for that, it also was really too short for what it tried to do. I think that had it been longer, the writing style really would have worked for me, but without more information the fairytale/myth like style just left me feeling like too much was glossed over (especially since I was incredibly interested in it!). It looks like you have to read more of the books to really get a complete tale, and I don鈥檛 really want to have to do that (though honestly, I think had this one been longer I would have wanted to read more, so that鈥檚 weird). Writing was good, setting was amazing, so I will check out more by this author, just maybe look for some books that bill themselves as full length. ...more

This one is going to hurt in a different way than the previous one. Bobby and Dash are so solid and absolutely in love and Dash is finally (mostly) out of his own way on that front. So some might worry that there wouldn't be much in the way of trauma and tension now that the relationship has reached it's happily ever after. Fear not! We still have the rest of the Last Picks to see through to make they're all squared away and happy. Dash's anxiety wont let him leave anyone he loves unhappy. Unfortunately, Keme is really going through it and he's not used to Dash's extreme brand of care. And it hurts to read! These two are brothers and they need to figure it out because nobody else is going to be there for them the same way! Luckily, we get a new type of HEA, the bro HEA and I was just so here for it.
Oh right, the mystery. Look, I always just am tickled by the little nods and direct references to famous mysteries. Honestly, it often makes me want to pick them up. For once, I knew the answer fairly early on, but it was just pure dumb luck. It's much more fun to follow along as Dash lays out the clues for you. Maybe you can be the one to explain it to him next time he tries to explain what happened. ...more

First, THANK YOU for an epilogue!! I've felt like the first two books in this series had the most abrupt endings and this one was just absolute perfection.
Now, the story. It's just so good. The grumpiest of grumpy characters meets quite frankly, the actual sun he's so sunshiney. I already loved Henri from the previous books but after reading this books I think that he is the character that most in the world needs to be protected at absolutely all costs. He's just too pure and good for this world. So pairing him with Atlas seems like the wrong call at first. I hated Atlas for a couple chapters, even with his POV. But oh he's just a little broken bird who needs someone to take care of him and Henri is the perfect choice for that. I really enjoyed the Ace rep too, I thought it was well done and realistic, especially with someone who is most definitely nowhere on the ace spectrum. I just adored this and read it so quickly because I could not put it down. Also if your a crier grab your tissues! There is some hurt in this book, but overall it is sweet and lovely!

I just am on my knees asking the author to write an epilogue. I actually usually feel like epilogues are gratuitous (not that I'm complaining), but a lot of time this series the ending is just a little bit abrupt. Maybe I just wanted more Max and Luke though. I usually absolutely love AM Johnson's work, but this one just didn't quite land for me. I think I needed a little more time with these characters before they fell in love, it just was very instantaneous especially for the setting and everything that was going on. I should have felt more for the characters, but I didn't really. Still, I felt intrigued enough to want to pick up the next one, so there was definitely something that still resonated for me!...more

Hudson thinks he's so tough and doesn't need anyone, but he needs people to protect so much. And Ty is so sunshiney and amazing especially after all he's been through. I thought it was fitting that this final installment would be two ex-cons, both men needing to grow and heal together. I found it to be very moving and emotional!...more
