Even though "The Dead Tracks" is the second book in Tim Weaver's David Raker series, it is also a standalone read.
The book's "What Happened to Missing Seventeen-year-old Megan Carver?" was intriguing.
Was she abducted or did she run away?
The first half was strong but as the book progressed, I lost interest and fast-forwarded to the book's final chapters.
I listened to the audiobook read by Michael Healy, who did an outstanding job with the narration....more

TW: Child trafficking.
A significant portion of this book was eerily similar to the Harvey Weinstein case.
Underaged girls were not cast in productions without producing sexual favors.
I listened to the audiobook.
Even though the book was well-written and Peter Ganim's narration was superb, I had zero interest in listening to a rehash of Harvey Weinstein-type allegations.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first DI Isabel Blook book and I was instantly hooked.

It's no secret that AJ McDine is one of my go-to authors.
This "Secrets" book recounts a parent's worst nightmare: * A teenager secures parental permission to have a house party. * A female teen attendee overdoses and is rushed to the hospital. The teen is unresponsive and her survival is uncertain.
Who gave drugs to the teens attending the party?
Who is to blame for the tragic event that happened?
This compelling, pacey, and intricately plotted story is not just a book about secrets.
Instead, it's a gripping story about parental love, blended family conflicts, spousal trust, drug abuse, and friendship.
It should be noted that this book is more of a domestic drama than a psychological thriller.
I listened to the audiobook read by Tamsin Kennard, who did an outstanding job with the narration.

What happens when a destitute unwed pregnant woman is introduced to a manipulative wealthy couple?
Told in multiple timelines with different plotlines, this "thriller" had more convoluted, implausible, and far-fetched "thrills" than this reader could count.
THE END RESULT? The book was dizzying, eye-rolling, and disappointing.
QUESTION FOR THE AUTHOR: Rose Carlyle, have you ever met a 6-year-old boy?
I am a boy-mom (and grandma of 3 grandsons!) and the 6-year-old in this book had the physical dexterity and mental acuity of a 16-year-old.
When finishing the book, my painful rolling eyes hurt too much to appreciate the book's final clever twist.
I enjoyed this author's debut novel so perhaps my expectations were too high.
I listened to the audiobook read by Siho Ellsmore, who did an excellent job with the narration.
Kudos to the author for her heartfelt Author's Note.

"The Boyfriend" is for lovers.
Lovers of Freida McFadden.
But this Freida lover was disappointed.
One must always be careful with Boyfriends and this book was no exception.
Boyfriend Warnings: * Slow start * Many, many eye-rolling moments
Boyfriend Love: * Enjoyed the author's strategically placed red herrings * Many LOL moments from the female protagonist's "There's no hope for my daughter unless she gets married NOW!" mother.
Although this was not my favorite Freida title, the book was engaging(no pun intended!) and the book's multiple twists kept me guessing.
I listened to the audiobook read by Victoria Connolly and Adam Blanford.
I always enjoy multi-cast audiobooks and both narrators did an outstanding job with the narration.
2.5 stars, bumped up to 3 stars since I am a biased boy-mom who always has a fondness for "Boyfriends"....more

But is this woman really Carla?
Ellie doesn't believe her.
Do you?
"Is this woman really who she says she is?" is not a new premise for psychological thrillers.
Although I was intrigued by the book's compelling premise, I was expecting talented author Nicola Sanders to put a more authentic and realistic spin on this popular and overdone premise.
Although the book's pacing was spot-on, the book had waaay too many eye-rolling moments.
I listened to the audiobook read by Jodie Harris. Her narration was good but not great.

When a sinfully wealthy financial scion allegedly dies in a freak "accident" at his lavish 60th birthday party celebration, the suspect list is sky-high.
This satirical tale about a dysfunctional family with four inheritance-obsessed children did not disappoint.
The book unfolds from three POVs: * The deceased financial scion, commenting from his temporary "resting spot" in his afterlife * The financial scion's widow * A social-media-obsessed "Sleuth".
I am a Bella Mackie fan and I especially enjoyed the author's dark humor and wit in addition to the book's scathing social commentary.
WHY NOT 5 STARS? Although the book was entertaining and engaging, the book was waaay too long and frequently dragged.
This 12-hour audiobook easily could have been an 8-hour book. (Where was Bella's editor????)
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kimberley Capero, Gabrielle Glaister, and Colin Mace.
Full-cast narrations are always a treat and all narrators did a superb job with the narration.
