This "BEAUTIFUL UGLY" book was PRETTY. 1) PRETTY Twisty. "The Queen of Twists" did not disappoint! 2) PRETTY Slow-Burn Fortunately, the book's slow-burn beginning picked up at the 50% mark. 3) PRETTY Typical, yet Atypical. Not a "typical" book about an insomniac author with writer's block and sightings of dead people. Instead, talented author Alice Feeney put a devious and unique spin on the "same old, same old". 4) PRETTY Unreliable Narrators. Who is unreliable and who is reliable? That is for readers to decide 5) PRETTY Gasp-Worthy. I GOL (Gasped Out Loud) three times. My gasp at the end of the book was particularly loud and resounding! 6) PRETTY Unusual Quote. Is "I HOPE YOU DIE IN YOUR SLEEP" a good or bad comment to say to your spouse? It's a BEAUTIFUL UGLY quote I will always associate with this PRETTY complex book. 7) PRETTY Awesome Audiobook Narration. I listened to the audiobook expertly read by Richard Armitage and Tuppence Middleton. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. 4.5 stars.

A 13-year-old girl steals her father's gun and intentionally shoots and kills her 13-year-old brother. The brother, BTW, was recently diagnosed with Huntington's Disease and his prognosis was grim. A small-town lawyer/family friend is hired to defend the young female protagonist. What's there not to like? 1) Pacing. Waaaay too slow. 2) Flowery text. Not a fan of flowery text. Although the book's "forgiveness and letting go" premise was ultra-compelling, the book did not work for me. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Thérèse Plummer, one of my favorite narrators. Even with a Thérèse Plummer narration, I struggled to keep my eyes open. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. 2.5 stars.

After listening to JP Carter's "At Your Door" (DCI Anna Tate #2), I circled back to listen to DCE Anna Tate #1. I was not disappointed. Nine nursery school children are abducted from a South London nursery school. One child has cystic fibrosis, requiring daily meds to survive. Who abducted the children and why? The book was pacey, character-driven, and never missed a beat. I especially enjoyed the book's police procedural. DCI Anna Tate's police work was spot-on. This book reminded me of Jackie Kabler's "The Vanishing of Class 3B", another book about the abduction of an entire class. I listened to the audiobook expertly narrated by Laura Kirman. 4.5 stars, rounded up.

This Audible Plus freebie had more minuses than plusses. K.L Slater is a talented and prolific writer. Some of her books are better than others; unfortunately, this was not one of the author's better books. Although the book was pacey and entertaining, it had waaay too many eye-rolling moments. Also, to quote my GR friend Ceecee, the ending was a "damp squid". As always, Claire Corbett did an outstanding with the narration. Will I listen to more KL Slater books? Just like my GR friend Ceecee, the answer is YES!

What happens when two ordinary women with nothing (and everything!) in common meet on a plane? Buckle your seatbelt. Get set to embark on a gripping and tumultuous journey. You'll discover a business trip like no other. Characterizations were strong, pacing was deliriously fast, and twists were plentiful, furious, and gasp-worthy. The book was unpredictable, unputdownable, and refreshingly different. I listened to the audiobook read by Andrew Eiden, Dylan Fitzpatrick, Fred Berman, Gail Shalan, Hillary Huber, Jennifer Pickens, John Pirhalla, Kimberly M. Wetherell, Kirby Heyborne, and Tim Campbell. Full-cast audiobooks are always a treat and the narration by all 10 narrators was absolutely, positively brilliant. Kudos to author Jessie Garcia for a very, very, very impressive debut. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. One of my besties of 2024. All the stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I kept on asking myself "Are We There Yet?", while listening to this book about a tumultuous airplane ride home. Although I enjoyed the book had some compelling moments, overall, there were problems with the book's pacing and repetitive text. The book's surprise revenge reveal was eye-rolling. I listened to the audiobook read by Geoff Sugiyama. Although Geoff Sugiyama did a terrific job with the narration, the book would have benefited from multiple narrators since it unfolded from multiple POVs. 2.5 stars.

This mother-in-law always loves evil mother-in-law books. ❤️❣️❤️ WHY? Evil mother-in-law books are fabulous self-esteem boosters! Unfortunately, this evil mother-in-law domestic drama lacked the thrills I was seeking. Action did not happen until the last chapters. Although the book was entertaining, it was certainly not the best in its genre. I listened to the audiobook read by Teri Clark Linden and Imani Jade Powers. Full-cast narrations are always a treat and both narrators did a superb job.

"Her Housekeeper" was a mess and a miss. TWO (2) stars for TOO many reasons: * TOO long. I listened to the 10-hour audiobook that easily could have been 6 hours. * TOO many eye-rolling moments. The book required a huge suspension of disbelief. * TOO much objectionable content. Not a fan of books about child rape and child abuse. A wife discovers her husband lying in a pool of blood. There were problems in their marriage. But did she kill him? The wife had been suffering from migraine-induced blackouts, so even she does not know the answer to this question. This fast-paced thriller was unputdownable. The book unfolded from the two POVs of the wife and the police detective investigating the crime. The book alternated the past with the present; providing readers with a deeper understanding of the events leading up to the couple's marital problems and the husband's death. I listened to the full-cast audiobook read by Mary Helen Gallucci, and Noah Michael Levine. Both narrators gave Academy Award performances. I usually don't enjoy books with controlling and verbally/emotionally abusive male protagonists and weak female protagonists --- yet, this book "hooked" me, from start to finish. I'll do my best to be succinct and not "rattle on" about this "Baby" book. WHIPLASH ALERT: Prolific author Daniel Hurst's "The Wife's Baby" featured more twists than Six Flags' Kingda Ka roller coaster. This pacey child abduction tale was unputdownable, refreshingly different, and never missed a beat. It was also a fun read. I guessed a few of the twists but failed to guess the author's final twist. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Angela Ness, who did an outstanding job with the narration. Daniel Hurst has written over 75 books and this is one of his better ones. 4.5 stars rounded up.

One minute should have been taken to state that "Here One Minute" is Book #2 of a trilogy. "After Anna" is book #1. "After Anna" was written 9 years ago so my memories of Book #1 were fuzzy. Less time elapsed between Book #1 and #2 would have been preferred. Although the book's "What Happened to the Abducted Children?" premise was compelling, this book was all over the place with an eye-rolling ending. Told from multiple POVs in different timelines, the book was dizzying. Some characters were more developed than others. I listened to the audiobook, read by Antonia Beamish. Antonia Beamish's narration was stellar, but the book would have benefited from a full-cast narration. This author has penned many 5-star books but this was not one of those books. 2.5 stars rounded up.

No Secret Lie: Prolific author Freida McFadden needs to slow down! Yes: This readable, pacey satirical short story did produce a few laughs. No joke: I wanted and expected more. Overall, "The Widow's Husband's Secret Lie" was absurd, eye-rolling, and lacked luster and believability. Yes: There are elements of believability in many satires, but not this one!
