At the time of reading, this book seems to be the most hyped book in my ŷ feed. Not a minute goes by without a review or update from this book popping up. If you know me, you know that no matter the type of book or the subject matter, if it is hyped I want to give it a go. With that in mind, when I started this, the only thing I knew about it was its hype I knew zero about the story, genre, type of book, etc. I just had a cover and a title!

Did it live up to the hype?

I think it did. I was entertained by the story and found it very easy to follow. It was a bit of historical fiction with some mystery involved eventually rounding off with a little courtroom drama. One of my favorite phrases to use when applicable is that “heart-strings were pulled, and there was definitely some of that happening here. I think if you like a good, well-told story you will like this one.

Who do I recommend it to?

Historical fiction fans for sure. Especially those interested in mid-20th Century American fiction. Issues of race and public perception at that time are key to the plot.
I am not sure there was enough mystery/courtroom drama to interest fans of those genres if that is specifically what you are looking for. But, there is enough if you just need to satiate a small hunger.
Also, while only a little steamy at times, I think fans of stories with some romance will enjoy this one. Again, if you need a lot of hot a heavy in your romance, you will not find it here, but the relationships in the story should be of interest.

Should you read it?

I feel like this story has a little of a bunch of genres and not too much of any. Because of this, I think it will appeal to a wide audience. So, if you have seen the hype in your feed, too, and have been wondering, I think you should try it out. You may not be blown away, but I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Eileen Great review! I think my husband's feelings were similar to yours. He did like it and it's different from most books that he's read (he's mainly sci-fi/fantasy in his readings with some spiritual nonfiction thrown in), but he said he wished the ending was a little longer. It wrapped up a bit too quickly for him. But overall, he enjoyed it. I've been getting into historical fiction this past year, and I love stories about relationships/character development, so I liked this book more than he did.

Thanks!

I think that this might be a book to easily to recommend to anyone unless they are hardcore into only one or two genres that are not represented in this book (i.e. horror, fantasy, sci-fi)

Holly B (slower pace!) Great thoughts Matthew! I loved this one for all the reasons you mentioned.

Rae Great review, Matthew! I agree with all you mentioned and loved it for exactly what it was...a little bit of all genres. And...I really did love the ending.

Chelsey (a_novel_idea11) Great review! I also loved how this novel has something for everyone.

Sassa Great review!

When I got in line, I was 180th (or so) on 30 copies. It actually went pretty quickly!

Pat Very nice review Matthew but, strangely, it has me off the book. I don't really want a bit of everything. And anyway, I have plenty to be going on with.

Matthew Pat wrote: "Very nice review Matthew but, strangely, it has me off the book. I don't really want a bit of everything. And anyway, I have plenty to be going on with."

Thanks, Pat! That's understandable - if you have a genre you like - or prefer that your books stick with a genre - this may not be the one for you.

Gloria ~ mzglorybe I’m glad you liked it Matthew, much more than I did apparently. I was totally bored and DNF after 13 chapters.

Sorry to hear that, Gloria! I hope your next book is better!

Laura I’m like 100 pages in. But dude. This writing. It’s killing me with its beauty.

Samantha Zee I gave this 3 stars cause I rounded up but while the writing is well done, the story is just meh to me. I found it a bit overhyped. But I'm glad you enjoyed it! My library has 54 copies of this book, all lent out so it's definitely popular

Wow! 54 copies!

I was a bit surprised I liked it as much as I did. Could have been the right book at the right time kind of scenario!

😁 I am always trying to smash through the barriers. I am willing to give pretty much any book a try. I cannot remember what book it was a read a few years ago, but most of the replies to my review were - you are a man? And you read this?🤣

Tracy Dishman This book has been on my TBR for too long.

The same happens to me, since I heavily devour classic science fiction like Heinlein, Matheson, Ellison etc. It's nice to break the boundaries! I honestly didn't know it was heavily read by women until someone told me so. My boyfriend loves the book.

Let's help defeat book stereotypes together!😁😁😁

DeB Really like your review, Matthew! I put off reading this one because I thought it sounded so implausible and had an overworked Disney-style plot, but was convinced by an aficionado of literary fiction. Your review is spot on: the novel is a bit of everything. It won me over especially, I think, since I’m missing Pat Conroy so much, and Owen’s nature description is evocative of his.

Thanks, DeB! :)

Glad that despite your concerns going in you ended up loving it!

I have never tried Pat Conroy before . . . sounds like maybe I should???

Rich sorry for me this was way over-rated barely scrapped in at 3 stars. i thought the story was so far fetched come on. I thought it was boring and seemed to drag and was boring at times. Sappy romance scenes and the murder mystery part ughhhhhhhhhhh-

I felt the same and her getting the colors of the Monarch butterfly wrong just made me very angry.
