2.75 stars
This book was enjoyable, I’m not going to deny that. I liked reading about the quirky characters and their penchant for solving murders. It was an intriguing and funny premise which did in a way deliver. But the problem was that it was very slow and even though there were some twists and turns they were quite anticlimactic. There were too many character perspectives during the book that just seemed unnecessary and a bit confusing. In theory the story seems quite captivating, but in reality it never made you sit on the edge of your seat or have to read the next chapter. Unfortunately, I wasn’t that invested in the crime and I wasn’t that curious about who the murderer was which is kind of the whole point of a mystery novel. It was an enjoyable book to cruise along with, but something you could pretty easily put down.

Update Feb 2023
I’m currently rereading this for book club so it will be interesting to see how it goes a second time round.

So I just finished the audiobook and I found that helped with my enjoyment of the book because the narrator was really great and it helped me invest in the characters and storyline a bit more. I think I liked the book slightly better this time around. I still agree with my review from 2020 but I would recommend the audiobook if you’re struggling to get into the story. I think I would rate it 2.75 or 3 stars so I’ll change my rating to a 3 to be generous haha.

Kelly Wickson Totally agree.

Julie I agree.

Mike I’m about half way through have to are not one that’s got me wanting to rush to finish it. Too many detracting chapters with Joyce

Laura Oh totally!! Joyce is a pleasant enough character, but she definitely doesn’t have you glued to the page

Karen Choo Exactly how I felt

Carol J. Brust Me too...

E M S B Well Laura I've just finished the book - Christmas present to myself - and you've expressed exactly what I feel and now wonder if it is worth me posting my review! Totally underwhelmed -too many 'extra characters and too much convoluted stuff - I want a good crime thriller !

Nick Bafatakis My sentiments exactly!

Nicnacnoodles Spot on!

Leona I agree with all the points in your review.

Laura Thanks everyone! I'm glad there are people who agree with me. Lot's of people absolutely raved about this book, but I just could not relate to their enthusiasm.

E M S B I did post my own review too. Well now there is a double page spread in The Times today about Richard & the phenomena of the book passing the 1mil number of purchases/downloads.... everyone else is buying it because everyone is buying it.... oh well...

Kim I've restarted this twice, and for the life of me cannot keep these characters straight. Great idea, wish it was either a smaller cast or thry were more unique. Honestly I have already forgotten who died, and I've been reading it today.

Totally agree, I really wanted to like this book, but I think it is just OK.

Hannahb Agree! This book was most definitely 'alright' but not sure what book the famous authors/celebrities who wrote the over-the-top glowing reviews all over the cover read! Unnecessarily complicated story, too many confusing characters, way too many anti-climactic 'twists'/resolutions and then a rather 'blah' ending. I fear this book has been overhyped and oversold...

Hilary I’ve only read the first 2 chapters and can’t say I’m desperate to pick it up and continue! I know I need to read on and might get drawn in more, but usually I know after a couple of chapters if I’m going to love it.
I will persevere though ....

ö Rossi This was exactly my experience too!

Christine I'm currently half way through and I don't get the hype with this book either. I'm not even sure that I like the way it's written, the dialogue is too confusing at times and there is no depth in the story. I'll finish it but I doubt that I will read the follow up that is due out towards the end of this year.

Theresa In total agreement with you Christine.

message 20: by Karen (new) - rated it 1 star

Karen I'm struggling. I really want to like it more than I do!

Christine I finally finished it yesterday and awarded it 1 star. It really was awful and I was also very confused by the plot and characters - in both cases, too many and nonsensical.

message 22: by Karen (new) - rated it 1 star

Karen I got a third of the way in, gave it 1 star and added it to my DNF list.

Molly Honestly couldn’t agree with this review more. Summed up exactly how I felt!

message 24: by Yael (new) - rated it 1 star

Yael you are absolutely right!

Schezreh Rabbani The characters were too many and too uninteresting to care about. The murder itself was not worth writing home about.. Underwhelmed by this grossly overhyped book

Skalman71 Perfect summary.

message 27: by Shay (new) - rated it 3 stars

Shay Canty Exactly!

Amanda Price I totally agree with you!

Elizabeth Maxwell My thoughts exactly

Rachel I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like it! I couldn’t get into it at all, abandoned it 1/3 of the way through. Basically a case of the marketing overselling the book.

message 31: by R (new) - rated it 2 stars

R S You just summed up exactly how I felt after reading this, thanks for your review

Caroline Mcgregor My feelings exactly! I just had no interest in any of the characters. I felt it was written more as a TV script?

message 33: by Beth (new) - added it

Beth Agreed! I couldn’t even finish it.

Tessa Perfectly said.

Laura Thanks everybody!! Glad that you all felt the same because I did not understand the hype around this book either.

message 36: by Mindy (new) - added it

Mindy Norris I’m not sure if I can finish it. While it’s cute - I don’t care who the killer is at all!! I might just give up. It is slow.

message 37: by Lori (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lori Wow, well I guess everyone is entitled to there own opinions. Maybe it really helps to know people in real life who live in a retirement community like Coopers Chase and hear first hand some of the hilarious and often outlandish things seniors do. I guess that's why I could relate? I just loved this book! But to each there own!

message 38: by shirin (new)

shirin I totally agreed.

Suzie Agree with everything you said. Parts of the book reminded me of Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon, which I thought was a lot better.

message 40: by Caitlin (new) - added it

Caitlin I agree, and I'm having a hard time getting started because it's moving so slow. I was so excited to read this book lol.

Shreya Rewari Perfectly articulated!

Steph A Yes agree. Cant understand why this was such a huge bestseller

Shreya Rewari Completely agree!

message 44: by Sally (new)

Sally Friend lent it to me. Have slowly made my way to page 53 and can't be bothered to go further. Friend thinks it's fantastic, I just don't get the appeal.

message 45: by Tina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tina Chaffin Were there two Steves? So confused about who was who other than the main characters.

Josie Bonham I'm glad I'm not alone! I hate giving any book a low rating, don't think I've given a 2 before, but it was that or not rate it at all.

message 47: by Ben (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ben I agree but with that review i think you should be giving it at least 3 stars.

message 48: by Theresa (new)

Theresa Murtagh I'm really struggling with this book, was expecting something great and so far it just incredibly boring.

message 49: by Amy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy Cope I concur! Desperate to “sink my teeth in but the opportunity never came

Adrienne Power Spot on. Can't seem to get into it and loose the train of what's going on... don't think I will continue.. got to page 50
