it was amazing

7 pages of glee made me grab my pogo stick!

Magical realism and I usually aren’t buds, but I raise my hand and yell EXCEPTION! EXCEPTION! This little story utterly wowed me. It’s about a woman who keeps finding things in her pockets, starting with a piece of fudge, and then lipstick. The writing is brilliant, the story funny and profound, the imagination out of this world. It moves fast like a river, thoughts all sparkly and sharp. I would give it 6 stars if I could. It took only ten minutes to read, but I'll remember it for years.

The last two paragraphs just about took my breath away and I’ve read them three times already. It’s 4:30 in the morning and I’m so excited, I’ll never get to sleep.

Thanks to Cheri for leading me to this gem. I’ll be Googling this author, I’ll tell you that.

Here's the link to the free story:

P.S. This story reminded me of one of my favorite books (magical realism, no less): The Daydreamer by Ian McEwan. Well, not the story, actually, but my reaction to it. Also one to check out.

Cecily Lovely enthusiasm for this delightful story. If you liked the ending, you may like the novel she co-wrote, This Is How You Lose the Time War.

(Personally, I wouldn't class this as magical realism, but that's not to say you're wrong to do so.)

Thanks, Cecily! I just added How to Lose the Time War. I'm dying to read it but have a lot of NG and EW obligations, so it will be awhile.

Ah, I have so much trouble with understanding the difference between fantasy and magical realism! And then there's the plain old sci-fi. Would you call this fantasy or sci-fi?

Cheri Ah, yes, Debbie! I can see why this would remind you of The Daydreamer, both such surprisingly delightful and unexpected finds! Love your enthusiasm for this little gem!

Anne Hi Debbie, I read this but didn't write a review. I also loved it and had my first laugh when she pulled the trombone out of her pocket. Terrific review, as usual. I just finished some tea with a scone. Sending you a scone now. Look in your pocket. :))

Thanks, Cheri, and thanks for leading me to it! Glad you see the connection to The Daydreamer--the stories are so different but there's a common theme of scrumptious imagination.

Thanks, Anne. Totally clever that you're sending me a scone. Oops, just found it. You're the best! How did you know I loved blueberry? And you must have just taken it out of the oven. Now I have a hot pocket. Hope it doesn't melt the lipstick.

Bianca I'll read it and then read your review. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks, Kimber! This one will not disappoint! And it’s just a 10-minute read. How can that much goodness come from just 10 minutes?!

C. (Comment, never msg). I loved it and have read "The Truth About Owls", which is profound too. I want Amal's honey poetry book. I love your remark among your commentors about scrumptious imagination! Creativity is my favourite trait. Do you wonder what went on with the violinist who received the fudge? Do object gift recipients join the reciprocal magic circle?

Short stories can seldom be explanatory or feel complete but 4 stars are high praise from me in this format. I will take a peek at "The Daydreamer". It is unsurprising in our circle that I have heard of Ian McEwan. I believe he is normally an adult author. Sincerely, Carolyn (lest you forget that is what "C" is for".

P.S. Would someone send me a scone, please? Any flavour will do, as long as it is the homemade kind unavailable in stores. I love that our own imaginations are out, in the style of "The Lake House" with Sandra Bullock and Canada's fine Keeanu Reeves.

Thanks, Carolyn, for your thoughtful comment. I want a scone right now, too! Yes, please check out "The Daydreamer." You won't be sorry. This is his only "children lit" book, but I say it's for adults, too.

Good questions! Did the violinist just eat the fudge? I would have, lol!
