really liked it

This was what I would call a hyper-realistic novel. It's about a mother, Ruth, and Eleanor, her drug addicted beautiful daughter. Eleanor has a baby she's unable to take care of, so Ruth takes Lily under her wing. Ruth is a devoted grandmother, striving to avoid the mistakes she thinks she made with Eleanor.

The writing offers us great insights into Ruth's thinking. People are simple but also complicated.
I found this novel utterly depressing but that's because it was realistic.

If you're after an uplifting novel, this is not that the right choice. If you're keen to read a well-written novel, Loved and Missed will certainly fit the bill.

JanB As a mom and a Nana, I'm sure this would be a dark read for me, but I do love a well-written thoughtful novel.

Canadian Jen An impactful review for what sounds like a tough read, Bianca

Jan, this read like I was inside Ruth, the writing is truly exceptional, it's just the subject matter broke me.

It was tough, Jen. I get so sad and depressed on account of the characters, as it reminds me yet again how unfair life is for some people.

Karen I’ll be reading it because I bought it 😊
Great review, Bianca!

Betsy Robinson We read that for my book club last month. The overall feeling in our group was not depression, although it was upsetting. We were stirred and moved. I'm curious-you're Australian, right, Bianca. Did you have any trouble with the Britishisms? We Americans did--those of us who read it as opposed to listening to it.

Diane Barnes I'll be reading this at some point. My library actually has a copy!

Jennifer Welsh I love well-written and depressing, Bianca, 😅. Thanks for this review

Antoinette Wonderful review, Bianca. So glad to see your appreciation for this book. Yes, a very sad book but it really showed the underlying strength of women. Didn’t you just love her friend Jean? I read this one about 3 months ago and it is one that has stayed with me.

Great review, Bianca!"

Thanks, Karen. I can't wait to find out what you make of it.

Hi Betsy. I'm Romanian but have been living in Australia for over twenty years. I haven't noticed the Britishisms as such. In theory, Australian English is closer to British English as the English colonised Australia. As you noticed, I spell things the British way.

Just a few minutes before reading your comment, in another Australian book group, some were complaining about the Americanisms being used in an Australian set and printed book, most of us don't like that, we kind of grumble about things being changed to suit the American market etc.

I prefer the British spelling because that's what I use, but that's not to say that I won't read a book with American spelling, especially if it's set in the US, written by an American.

I dislike the sterilisation of cultures and languages to suit the powerful (ie the US). I also favour regionalisms, and colloquialisms and all the other things that make languages unique, with Google at our fingertips, it's easy to find out what things mean.

It's quite short Diane, can't wait to find out what you make of it.

Hahaha, they seem to be the kind of books I often read. My problem is that I can't distance myself from some books, they affect me, I cry too easily when it comes to books and movies.

Bianca, I'm the same! But I find it cathartic, which I've been missing lately :)

Fran Excellent review, Bianca! Well written emotional novels are always on my radar!💙

Mark Porton Great review Bianca, it was a tough read wasn't it? I agree with your comments about it being sad - I did think there was a little bit of hope in it though, no?

Sure, there was a little hope, but the sadness and unfairness of life overwhelmed it/me.
