Notes:
(1) Hermione: "Next time there’s a ball, ask me before someone else does, and not as a last resort!"
Ron: "Well that just proves completely missed the point "
Narrator: "[Harry] somehow thought that Hermione had gotten the point much better than Ron had."
- The saddest non-death scene of the series.
- Hermione's tough, but so weak for Ron :(

(1) For someone who doesn't think much of muggles, Fudge sure loves to wear their clothes.
(2) "Sirius Black!" [Mrs. Weasley] shrieked, pointing at him.
"Mum, shut up!" Ron yelled. "It’s okay!"'
- Often a good "shut up" is the quickest remedy for hysteria.
(3) Dumbledore forces Sirius and Snape to shake hands. Ever the teacher, ever the students.

Notes:
(1) Fawkes uses his tears to speed up Harry's wounds healing. That's handy... sort of like wizard Polysporin.
(2) Now that Fleur likes Ron and pays him attention, I guess she's not hot no more. Not surprising. (see gif)
- Alternatively, once kissed, perhaps her veela powers wore off.
- Alternatively, perhaps Ron's shifted his attention elsewhere.

(1) Harry's first clue should have been that Crouch always called Voldemort "The Dark Lord." All upright wizards use "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." The boldest just say Voldemort.
(2) Wonder if all the lip licking meant David Tennant needed ChapStick on standby?
(3) Karkaroff fled? Who's going to sail the ship back to Durmstrang? Magic, most likely.

Notes:
(1) Not the most impressive group of Death Eaters here. A bunch of no-names, Buckbeak's would-be executioner and some Slytherin dads.
(2) Wormtail speaks rat. Apparently being animagus gives you the ability to speak to animals. I guess McGonagall speaks cat.
(3) Voldemort gives a traditional villain tell-all monologue. A tad cliché if you ask me.

(1) '"Stop being noble," said Harry irritably. "Just take it, then we can get out of here."'
- Yeah, Cedric, stop being noble! Wait... no! Be noble! Take a dive!
(2) First student death, and the series is never the same again.
(3) Baby Voldemort is no Baby Yoda.
(4) Color-changing tattoos would be a goldmine!
(5) "Lord Voldemort had risen again."

Molly: "Oh! ... No of course I didn’t!"
Narrator: "But she became considerably warmer toward Hermione after that."

(1) Continuity error. This is set in 1994, the Macarena (see gif) wasn't a thing until 1996.
- The male cheerleader on the right's creeping me out.
(2) "Fleur ... was eyeing Bill with great interest over her mother’s shoulder. Harry could tell she had no objection whatsoever to long hair or earrings with fangs on them."

Glitchreads:
(1) Somehow, my recent review for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" switched editions. Normally I'd switch it back, but it's the second review I've written for the book, and ŷ only lets you switch the edition of either your earlier or more popular review. So now my book covers no longer match! and my OCD is driving me nuts!

(1) 'Both Harry’s and Ron’s [Easter eggs] were the size of dragon eggs and full of homemade toffee. Hermione’s, however, was smaller than a chicken egg. Her face fell when she saw it.
"Your mum doesn’t read 'Witch Weekly,' by any chance, does she, Ron?" she asked quietly.
"Yeah ... Gets it for the recipes."
Hermione looked sadly at her tiny egg.'

Definitely. Ron is especially clueless, I'd say, until midway through Half-Blood Prince. He knows he's feeling something, but he doesn't understand what it is. Meanwhile, Hermione continually hints at her feelings but never gets any reaction.

Kenz The Dragon Queen Harry as the third wheel: knowing which friend is right, but not saying anything as to create an imbalance in the dynamic.

Yes, I think you're 100% right about that. I figure Harry expects something will happen eventually, good or bad, but that he doesn't want to be the cause of it. It actually says a lot about Harry's character that he takes an entirely hands-off approach about the whole thing.

If it were me, I'd take Ron aside and tell him what the deal is, if anything to expedite the inevitable fireworks, good or bad. You know, time-bomb's going to blow anyhow, may as well do it in a controlled environment.

Mrinmayi I really appreciated Hermoine for standing up for herself...like l get Ron is clueless about his feelings but he unknowingly hurt her feelings 😔 Kinda felt for her

Yeah, this is really the first time Hermione sort of lays her cards on the table. By saying that Ron should have asked her, she's implying that she noticed his jealousy and understands his feelings toward her, and implying she would have accepted indicates she has feelings toward him. It's a very loaded statement that completely goes over his head.

jade oof! this moment still hurts just as much as when i read it when i was a kid. perfectly put in the comment above, jason; it's such a loaded statement and ron does NOT get it, even while hermione is trying so hard to show how she feels about the situation (and by extension, him).

Jayson jade wrote: "oof! this moment still hurts just as much as when i read it when i was a kid. perfectly put in the comment above, jason; it's such a loaded statement and ron does NOT get it, even while hermione is..."

You're right about that, it's one of those scenes that still hits you in the feels no matter how many times you read it. The whole situation's really a turning point in their relationship. You know, how much pain and bad feelings could have been avoided over the last four books if he only asked her to the ball? Though, perhaps that would have led to an entirely different set of issues.

Kenz The Dragon Queen I agree, I probably would have done the same thing. Although, by staying out of it, Harry kind of alleviates any blame he would otherwise get.

Virginia Ronan ♥ Herondale ♥ Poor Hermione! She definitely didn't have it easy with Ron! He was so oblivious and thick. *lol*

Jayson Kenzie wrote: "I agree, I probably would have done the same thing. Although, by staying out of it, Harry kind of alleviates any blame he would otherwise get."

Exactly, and I think in a worst case scenario he could lose both his friends, whereas if they just stopped being friends with each other he could keep them as friends individually.

Jayson Virginia Ronan wrote: "Poor Hermione! She definitely didn't have it easy with Ron! He was so oblivious and thick. *lol*"

Yeah, he definitely put her in a no-win situation. Either go to the Ball with Krum or wait for the possibility that Ron would come around to asking her, and risk not having a date for the Ball at all. Ultimately Ron did ask her, but at the last minute, and couched in the option of going with either him or Harry.

Part of me believes he's not as oblivious as he seemed to be. Ron could have simply not been ready or was scared, and the Yule Ball forced everyone's hand on the matter. He says as much in Deathly Hallows that he wishes he didn't pass up opportunities to start things with Hermione much sooner, which seems to indicate he had definite romantic feelings for her at this point or possibly earlier.

Yes, certainly so far as feelings are concerned. It's a running gag that everyone but him knows what the deal is with him and Hermione, even his own mother.

Mrinmayi I am not the biggest fan of love triangles but l loved this one :between Ron, Hermoine and Victor
It created the right amount of angst and also the slow burn romance was amazing. I preferred them building their relation on friendship. Although I wanted to smack Ron on his head sometimes when they finally got together everything was worth the wait

I really enjoyed the drawn-out tease as well. The fact that it lasted so long and was fuel for so many dramatic subplots was great. Very few authors have that sort of discipline. Personally, I just wish the payoff was better, and that they had a more substantial scene about it at the end. You know, have them talk about it a bit afterward.

I hold out hope for some sort of Ron/Hermione rom-com following the events of the books. Even a short story would be nice 😁

Mrinmayi Yes...l hope one day we will get books following different characters (marauders, foundling members of Hogwarts)..anything than the cursed child will be better 😐 Novellas following various couples would also be great🤩

Yeah, I'd much prefer slice-of-life stories in the wizarding world to the ridiculousness that was The Cursed Child. They were often the best parts of the series, like this one here. One of the reasons I think this scene resonates so much is that, add some running mascara, and you have the quintessential ruined prom scene from every high school drama ever. We've seen it before but never in this setting. I'd like more of that... though hopefully less sad.

message 21: by Mrinmayi (new)

Mrinmayi What makes it special is that the characters are relatable. It is a trope that has been done before but unlike the high school dramas which can be OTT we were given a more realistic version. Reading HP we could see ourselves in the characters which makes it memorable 😊

Yes, I agree. Character building is where a lot of the investment is in storytelling. Part of the reason I'd like stories from after the books ended is that we have so many well-established characters that it just feels a waste not to use them.
