Wells again forecasts terrible things for the future, in this case centered on one man, a scientist, and his lack of true compassion and his self-centered egotism.
Do ethics have a place in science and scientific inquiry? Where does Man fit in with the life forms on the Earth? Can a man create as a god without terrible consequences? These are some of the ideas that Wells explores.
To me this was a horror story. This is the second HG Wells I've read in a row, and I need a break from him for a while. He is an excellent writer, but like Stephen King sometimes his horror is too close to reality. We know today men who put their own selves above ethics and above common humanity, without sympathy, empathy or compassion.

Stephen King is such a skilled writer, and having seen the movie I was more prepared for the scary parts. Besides his awesome writing, I think the thing I come back to King for is his character development. I always care deeply about his characters; sometimes I wish I hadn't, sometimes bad things happen to good people. But King is unafraid to look deeply within his characters and find what is inside, be it horrifying or ultimate good;(even the mouse.) There are wonderful, fully developed characters in this book. He blends the previous stories of the series seamlessly, enlarging on or revisiting small moments in the other books. (There is no such thing as a small moment in Stephen King books, however. Highly recommended. Now in a single volume I believe....more

Despite the fact that I saw the movie, reading this is still full of suspense and a wonderful read. Stephen King is one of the best writers I know of, despite the genre, which keeps him from proper accolades. We get to know the characters of part one a little more. John Coffey is nearly absent in this book, but we know he reappears and is the main character in the book. I won't do spoilers, but I found this a great read. What I love about books over movies is in the details....more

It helped because I could easily envision all the characters as i read, while still enjoying Mr. King's wonderful writing. And it helped that I knew what was coming, which is also what didn't help. I knew some bad and hard things were coming and almost couldn't make myself continue reading. That there is slight difference between book and movie is good then. This is only #1 and I have the other five. Stephen King is one of the best writers there are, and is the best writer in this genre. This is a hard and a sad story, but there is a sweet and gentle and good tone beneath it all. Loving it....more

That said, I cannot imagine the mind he lives in. I stopped reading him for a long time because Cujo and Pet Sematary were just too real. I've had this book on my shelves for about 12 years or more, and since I'm pledged to read more this year, I thought it was time to give Stephen another try. Same experience except the ending was so disappointing that I cannot get over it. I mean, I can take the repetition of the grisly stuff, all right, and I can take the killing of innocents, but to just give up on the ending and leave it hanging. Okay, so there could be a sequel, there's enough material to do it, but none has emerged (13 years later). If you are in to zombies, you will like this book. If you like making up your own endings, this will do it for you. For me, I'll regretfully stay away from King for a while and read some puppy stories....more
I read this many, many years ago and only had a vague familiarity with the plot, but it certainly came back to me. At my age and here in the 21st centI read this many, many years ago and only had a vague familiarity with the plot, but it certainly came back to me. At my age and here in the 21st century, it is interesting to read science fiction and what the authors thought the Earth might be in the future. Especially from a 19th century author as skilled as H.G. Wells.
I looked at some trailers for the movies made of this story last night. Reading this horror is one thing, and scary enough for me, but seeing it on screen just a bit too scary! Wells believed that if man continued on his current love of power and privilege heartless to those who suffered, he would eventually end up as spoiled children, and those below him as beings to have a horror of.
Good book, well written and definitely scary....more
