There are chapters covering many of life's challenges. Each chapter has a short discussion/ideas of a better way of dealing with the ups and downs of life, followed by quotes from many sources.
Some of the headings are: Trampled Feelings, The Journey of Relationship, Simple Pleasures, Follow the Leader, and Unfamiliar Territory. All along are pictures of a dog and cat to accompany you on your journey. This is one I will revisit often, just when I don't have time for a novel, or need a boost, or need reminded that life is a gift, and that in spite of hard times and disappointments, Life Is Good. Attitude is really everything....more

Raise up a child in the way you wish him to go, and he will likely become just that. The author was indoctrinated into the Hitler Youth at the age of 10, already eager to serve Adolf Hitler. He became a Bannfuhrer Lieutenant General before the age of 18. With Alfons thoroughly idolizing the Nazi Party, in particular Hitler, we go behind the scenes. The reality of the Holocaust (the author says) was unknown to the German people and some of its soldiers until after the War. A stunning historical reference; a warning for the future.
I found it much harder to accept the harsh reality of the German experience in the Third Reich. We, a civilized, humane people, had allowed ourselves to become indifferent to brutality committed by our own government on our own citizens.

So, though I was not there to buy books, I picked this one up, and am very glad I did.
This is a light-hearted series of essays (I would say devotions, but that might scare you off [not "religion"]. Jim talks about his growing up, people who have influenced him, and How To Break Away From The Rat Race, Technology and Instant Gratification that wears us all down. We scurry around wondering (and wandering) why we are depressed, anxious, and worried all the time.
These are indeed Simple steps to lighten that load and put a smile on our faces again. Read one a day, or binge like I did. Wonderful. Writing assisted by Cindy Pearlman.
Treat yourself.

This book is actually a collection of 3 books by the author: Believe, All God's Creatures, and On Earth as it is in Heaven. I have had this book on my shelf for years and years. I heard of the author (artist) in an article about children who have gone to heaven and how she took this loss and made it art. Included is poetry by John Wm. Sisson in Part One. Each angel being the essence of a characteristic such as Love or Compassion. Part Two is the story of Rosie, who went to heaven and wanted to tell her (living) brother and sister all about it's wonders. Part Three is the story of Jacob, newly in heaven who can hardly wait for an assignment, which involves caring for an animal. All creatures go to heaven. This is a healing book for the trauma of losing a child, and the stories would be readable for little children, as read to them or if they can read. Also might be good for children when there is a death in the family, or to explain heaven. Beautiful artwork, beautiful stories. ()...more

Foreward by DoriThe Guideposts edition is a collection of two of Stepahnie's books about animals and how they are important and healing in our lives. Foreward by Doris Day. "This book is a collection of true stories about animals who have displayed the sort of love and humanity we humans aspire to achieve not only of dogs, but also of many other animals..." I loved this book. All animals are sacred and have things to teach us about love, survival, kindness, empathy and healing. Here are heroes, healers, angels, friends, empaths, unconditional love-giving, loyal, selfless, wondrous friends; and occasionally a human who recognized this and saved them. Some animals gave their lives for the human, or ignored great peril to save them. Some just gave love, and that was enough. If you are curious about animals, or love animals, or believe, as I do, that they are angels, you'll want to read this book....more

I Could have been a very dry book, but the author did a good job of moving the story along, although action is not a word to describe this biography. I learned a number of things about J.R.R. Tolkien that I never knew before. One was his friendship with C.S. Lewis, the author of the Narnia series; that his profession and passion centered around philology and mythology, and that he was without a father in his life. A little bit of history thrown in as Tolkien was born in 1892.
Worth the read if you love Tolkien and Middle Earth....more

Mixed breeds are your best dogs, and although some of these stories are about dogs that have been misused or abused, the tone is kept light and the details for the most part not dwelled upon.
Although the author doesn't like the phrase "the dog saved me rather than I saved him," he does show how much truth there is in that idea. He shows how dogs give hope to the hopeless, company to the lonely, and strength to the weak. He also shows how some behaviors are not "bad dog" traits, but a result of the dogs' past experiences and losses. Patience, love, and time will often create a wonderful companion.

I remember seeing the fire hoses, the dogs biting on children, the marches, the billy clubs, and the faces filled with hate. I remember when 4 little girls were killed in a church bombing. I remember the March on Washington and the I Have a Dream speech. I also remember when much of white America thought Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. should be put in jail and kept there. When my parents said, people shouldn't interfere with what is tradition in the South. Everything I read in this book is true. If you weren't alive then, and even if you were, I urge you to read this book. We have come far in terms of segregation, but in other ways we have yet to cross the street. Hate is a strong force, and social media has made misinformation even stronger a force. We need to act what we believe as far as our religion, and we need to resist the forces of evil. Dr. King was a man of integrity and he was willing to die for what he knew was right. He died not only for saying that the black man should have equal rights in a democracy, or for standing up for the poor, but for his opposition to the Vietnam War. We will never know the full story of his assassination, just as we will never know the full story of the assassination of John Kennedy or RFK. We need to work harder for peace, integrity and freedom in America. ...more
